Windows 10 is built to have smarter and faster responses when processing commands and requests. For example, when you plug in a new hard drive, it will automatically perform the necessary actions to integrate the new device to other components of the system. However, it does not follow that this process is invulnerable— sometimes, the system fails to detect the hard drive.

OVERVIEW OF THE ERROR 'HARD DRIVE NOT SHOWING UP'

There are a few scenarios that a Windows user might encounter when they install a new internal hard drive:

Internal Hard Drive does not show up in Windows Disk Management

If the new drive cannot be found when using the Disk Management feature, the physical installation might have failed. You can try opening the BIOS menu and locate the drive from there.

Can't see the hard drive in Windows 10

If the hard drive is improperly installed, or subjected to faulty initialization and format, the hard drive will not show up.

The external hard drive does not appear

FIXING THE 'HARD DRIVE NOT SHOWING UP' ERROR

1. CHECK IF DISK IS CONNECTED PROPERLY

a. It's important to double-check the connections from your hard drive to the PC. Ensure that the cables connecting the hard drive to the power supply or motherboard are in place. If data cables are switched or misplaced, the system cannot detect the hard drive.

If you do not know how to check wires, do not attempt to plug/unplug any connected cables on the drive. Rather, have an expert look at your computer.

2. INITIALIZE DISK

a. Press Win + X and choose the Disk Management selection.

b. On the Disk Management window, you will see a list of all connected hard drives to the PC. Choose the drive that is unallocated and unknown. Right-click on it and select Initialize Disk.

c. A prompt will ask you whether you want the hard drive to have a GUID Partition Table (GPT) or Master Boot Record (MBR). Select one and click OK. (GPT is usually recommended, but you can read up about these two online before choosing).

d. The window will redirect to the Disk Management window. Select the initialized hard drive (listed as Online and Basic) and right-click. Choose New Simple Volume. Click on Next.

e. Assign a drive letter.

f. Format the drive in the simple volume by following the wizard. Most users prefer the NFTS file system. Perform a quick format.

g. Restart your PC.

3. UPDATE DRIVERS

a. On your search bar, type Settings and click on Update & Security.

b. Choose Windows Update and then click the Check for updates selection.

c. Wait for the update to complete. If an update is published in the Windows Update service, updates will be downloaded and installed automatically.

4. RUN DISKPART COMMAND

a. Launch Command Prompt.

b. On the command line, key in diskpart and hit Enter.

c. Type these commands one by one and click Enter key after each one:

list disk

select disk

clean

d. When prompt says the command is executed successfully, close Command window and restart your PC.

Note: make sure that you are running diskpart on the correct hard drive to make sure that no data is wiped.

5. CHECK BIOS

a. Reboot your PC. When the Windows logo appears, click F2 or DEL a few times to enter the BIOS interface.

b. Check whether the hard drive is in the list of all connected drives. If it does not appear, it could probably be because the hard drive is not connected properly.

6. CONNECT THE HARD DRIVE IN ANOTHER PORT

A hard drive malfunction may be caused by faulty wiring or damaged ports. Connect your hard drive to another SATA port on the PC's motherboard. If after doing this, the hard drive remains undiscoverable, the problem may be on the cables. You can try replacing old cables with new ones and check to see if the drive is now listed as a connected drive.

If you do not have any prior knowledge about hard drive cables and ports, do not attempt to do this method on your own. It would be better to approach an IT expert who knows their way around computers to avoid damaging your system further.

CONCLUSION

Apps :: Cannot Change MSCONFIG From Selective To Normal Start Up

I have noticed in my fresh clean install of Windows 10 Pro, when running MSCONFIG that my system is set to Selective startup. If I select Normal startup and click Apply, it immediately defaults back to Selective startup again.
I also notice that one service under the Services tab is not selected - Geolocation Service. Here too, when I select it and click Apply, the check box is cleared again.
I have not disabled any start up programs. Only thing I did was uninstall MS Apps Get Office and Get Skype.

Performance :: Stuck In Selective Startup

I was instructed to use Selective Startup to get Quicken installed (didn't work), and now I can't get out!
This is a laptop that has been stuck with the Microsoft account login (cannot fix it as other options are grayed out). I cannot login with my Microsoft login (says password is wrong), but I can get in using just the Admin. acct., with same password.

Msconfig - Service Running But Disabled

Windows Defender is shown both running AND disabled. I have no third-party security or firewall.
I am unable to select this service here (msconfig)-(but rightly set as 'Automatic' in services.msc) nor am I able to set Normal Startup: on applying, all changes are cancelled.

MSConfig - System Configuration Changes Freezes Computer

I have the very latest Build of Windows 10 Pro, but recently I have experienced problems with my PC’s general performance – I therefore decided to Run msconfig to then uncheck some 3rd party programs under services within the System Configuration Hiding All window services first.
What is happening is that when I disable all and then go about checking the 3rd party progs one by one, the 1st attempt to tick one of the programmes the system config freezes. I have to then reboot the PC but the same thing happens if I try and attempt to do this again.
if I try the same thing but booting within Safe mode the PC does not freeze – so my question is .. can this action only be carried out in Safe mode ??
I have searched the internet for a few days now but cannot come up with an answer to this .. if you are supposed to be able to do this under normal windows start up then I have a big problem with my OS but if this is a procedure that can only be carried out within safe mode then all is well.

I have three entries (among others) that are slated to startup when I logon. Each of them are featured twice in the start up tab of program manager.
On checking with autoruns I found that they occurred twice in the registry under

Installation :: Wrong Drive Letter In Msconfig / Boot In Dual Boot System

In my desktop I have two hard disks ( disk 0 and disk 1 ) . Disk 1 is a clone of disk 0 created by Macrium Reflect
Disk 0 : ( C: ) windows 10 pro , upgrade from windows 7 , ( E: ) windows 8.1 pro , ( G: ) Storage partition
Disk 1 : clone of disk 0
problem description : I see in msconfig / boot a wrong listing
windows 10 ( C:WINDOWS) : Current OS ; Default OS
windows 8.1 pro ( H:WINDOWS ) instead of ( E:WINDOWS )
Nevertheless the dual booting works fine as well as the shift between the disks via BIOS.
The question is , could I fix the situation using the EasyBCD of Neosmart Technologies to edit the bootloader ?
I see can change drive letter H: to E: and save the change , am I right or wrong ? or any other way ....

MSConfig Boot - Can Only Boot In Safe Mode

Over the weekend I upgraded from 8.1 (which was working perfectly) to Windows 10. Unfortunately, it had a few problems - namely that it would 'hang' at random intervals (5 minutes to 5+ hours). In an attempt to isolate what was causing this, I was advised to use Msconfig to do a clean boot.
Unfortunately, in the process, I have rendered my PC near-useless, as I accidentally ticked the box 'Use original boot configuration' under Selective startup. (I know, I know. I'm so cross with myself.) As a result, I am now presented with what looks like my old boot screen - offering Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 8.1 with Media Center, but no Windows 10.
(I originally had Windows 7 on what is now my D: drive. I ended up dual booting with this and Windows 8, but I'm pretty sure the version of 8.1 - which I've just upgraded to Windows 10 - was a clean install. It's certainly on my SSD (C: drive).)
Anyway, by using Change defaults... - Choose other options - Troubleshoot - Start-up Settings, I was at least able to bring up the screen that gives you Safe Mode as an option. This allowed me to boot into Windows 10 Safe Mode.
I went back to MSConfig and eventually found a way to deselect 'Use original boot configuration' (it was greyed out for a while). However, on restart, it still showed me the old options, i.e. no sign of Windows 10 Pro. It seems the only way I can currently boot into Windows 10 is via Safe Mode.
I've tried various things today - I tried to use Bcdedit to force it to look at the C: not D: drive, and I've tried booting with a Windows 10 DVD and using the Repair option (but partway into the repair process it starts thinking it's a Windows 8 machine again...).
I've just 'spoken' to a chap at Microsoft and he is adamant that there's no alternative (because there's no Refresh option under Settings - Update & Security - Recovery) but to reinstall Windows 8.0, and then upgrade to 8.1 and then Windows 10. As you can imagine, I really, really don't want to go down that route. But, at the moment, I can't even roll back to 8.1.
Given that I can still - sort of - boot into Windows 10, the correct MBR/BCD/whatever must still be on my C: drive somewhere, surely?

Unable To Startup PC

I'm unable to boot the computer. An Automatic Repair screen runs, then a Diagnosing PC screen. The Repair/Diagnosis fails and I end up on a blue screen that says the problem couldn't be diagnosed and provides options to 'Restart Computer' (which just leads into the same loop) or 'Advanced Options.' I hit 'Advanced Options', then 'Troubleshoot', then another 'Advanced Options', then 'Startup Settings' (on this screen there are also options for 'Reset System', 'Restore Previous Build' and others, all of which failed), then 'Restart'.
It routed back to the same blue screen 'Your PC did not start correctly'.
I don't have any startup disk. Do not have other pc to download software.
When I tried to reset the PC, was prompted 'There was a problem resetting your PC. No changes were made.'

PC Reboots Once After First Startup Every Day

Once every day after first start up my pc decides to reboot, and it seems to be quite random at which time it reboots. Can be just when I enter windows or after 20 minutes. Then the power goes back on for a sec and it tries to start but then in an instant reboots again and then it runs fine for the rest of the day. I have not done extensive testing on different components and since I dont get a BSOD I dont really know where to start and since it only happens once a day I can only test one solution every day .

Upgraded to Win 10 a couple of months ago on Toshiba laptop. All was well until about 3 weeks or so ago, after an OS update. Windows will still startup to the desktop however a couple of seconds after the desktop screen appears, the default browser (Firefox in this case but did not matter which one is checked as default - have Edge, Chrome and FireFox) opens to an MSN homepage. Not really a HUGE problem as I can click and close it out but it is just an annoying issue. Have been virtually everywhere in the system and cannot find anything that will stop this. Have checked plugins, searched for malware, looked at task and startup manager and can find nothing that will stop.
