Red Dead Redemption is a third person open-world action adventure game set in the Wild West.

Released by Rockstar Games in 2010, RDR came on the back of their already phenomenally successful Grand Theft Auto series and is often described as GTA on horseback.

Set in 1911, the main protagonist is gunslinger John Marston, whose family have been kidnapped by the government to force him into tracking down the remaining members of his old gang of outlaws.

Marston roams around a massive open-world environment, on foot, horseback and in various wagons, meeting and interacting with items and characters.

Fighting is realistic and takes a great deal of targeting skill. It also makes use of ‘Dead Eye’, a gameplay mechanic that enables enemies to be targeted in slow motion. You can take cover, run away, or target specific body parts in order to disable someone. Being handy with a gun is a vital part of RDR.

A morality system also scores characters on their actions, and can affect future interactions and outcomes. If you are a good guy, you will get discounts at shops and better pay. A low honour rating will see people act warily around you but it will mean you get more respect from any other bad guys you encounter.

Similar to the GTA games, there is also a wanted system, where the Marshal or even the army will start to pursue you. You can erase your wanted status by killing all the lawmen in the town – but this will put a price on your head and bounty hunters will start to track you down.

The characters are all well-rounded, with a script and dialogue that really adds to the atmosphere. Along with the main storyline, there are a lot of side missions, which can help hone your techniques and give you extra cash or honour points. These are things like tracking down wanted villains, helping travellers in trouble or playing games at seedy bars.

As you would expect from the gaming gods at Rockstar, Red Dead Redemption is a multi-layered game that you can tear through in a few days or explore at your leisure.
